First and foremost is the Mitre Peak standing a proud 1,692 metres above sea level - with another five separate peaks that cluster around this solemn and arrow-headed summit.

Then, as we were moving on with our cruise on the Sound, the great fjord itself was unfolding in front of our eyes (and cameras, of course!) like pages of a book about a magic blue planet.

You will find thousands of stunning pictures of Milford Sound online. But not even the professional ones can adequately capture the majesty of the landscape or the clarity of the air; or those so many shades of blue and green the water on the fjord can have.

We visited from Te Anau; we started driving early morning and the landscape on the way to Milford Sound was fabulous.

The road follows the Eglinton Valley and, as the sun was still behind the mountains, it was a floaty mist hanging low over the frosty grass making everything magic.

You really have to go there to see it, even if that usually means many hours of flying and a fairly major investment.
